KRALENDIJK – Member of Parliament Van Brenk (50PLUS) wants residents living near the Selibon landfill on Bonaire to be actively offered a health check. She submitted a motion to this effect on 23 September during the debate on the Kingdom Relations budget.
The reason is the significantly elevated dioxin levels that have been found in the food chain near Selibon. In her motion, Van Brenk argues that the GGD (Public Health Service) and the Public Entity of Bonaire did not communicate openly about this in order to prevent public unrest.
The motion also states that there appears to have been a concealment of serious health risks. On that basis, Van Brenk calls on the government to take responsibility for the health of local residents.
The health check should be offered to residents near Selibon who are represented by Pro Lagun. Van Brenk also wants the health check to be repeated annually.
The motion comes shortly after reports about the high dioxin levels found in goats near Selibon. The matter has now also reached the Dutch House of Representatives.
The motion will be voted on Tuesday, 29 September in the House of Representatives.
