KRALENDIJK— Bonaire’s General Federation of Workers AFBW, has organised a union training course in collaboration with the Centre for Formation (CENFOR) and the Federacion di Trahadornan di Aruba (FTA), under the title Basic Skills for Shop Stewards and Negotiation. The course took place on 22, 23 and 24 September, with 45 participants.
Throughout the three days, the union house was well attended by participants who came to strengthen their knowledge and skills in union work. Several board members and council members were also present, as well as the chairperson of the ABV, Gina Maduro.
The course was delivered by Hubert Dirksz, Tyrone Bremo and Ryan Giel, with support from FTA chairperson Hose Figaroa.
The programme consisted of four components: what is a trade union, the responsibilities of a shop steward, reality analysis, and negotiation techniques. These topics provide a foundation for union representatives to defend workers’ interests and prepare themselves for negotiations.
According to AFBW, every member matters, regardless of their role within the organisation. Whether a regular member, a shop steward, a board member or an adviser — each person plays a part in the union’s success. The organisation therefore emphasises continuous learning, developing members’ skills, sharing knowledge and putting what has been learned into practice.
With this course, AFBW continues to work towards the continuity and stability of the union organisations AFBW and USIBO.
