ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius - Young people on St. Eustatius are becoming more involved in environmental awareness and community service through a new initiative organised by Thee Impact in partnership with EJL Services BV and MDT Statia.

The programme recently included an educational visit to the island’s Waste Solutions Plant, where participants learned about waste collection, recycling and environmental management on Statia. Youth also received information about possible career opportunities within the waste management and environmental services sector.

According to Youth Worker Curdi Lewis, the initiative is intended to encourage greater youth participation in community development and environmental protection.

The activities later expanded into a community clean-up campaign in Princess Gardens ahead of the 2026 Atlantic Hurricane Season. As part of the campaign, a temporary garbage collection bin will be placed in the area from May 29 through June 5 to allow residents to dispose of waste and bulk items.
