KRALENDIJK – Organisations in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom have until 1 June to apply for subsidies for community projects related to the trans-Atlantic slavery past. For medium-sized and large initiatives, up to 500,000 dollars is available in some cases.
This follows from a press release about the subsidy scheme for community initiatives related to the slavery past. The scheme targets foundations and associations in the Caribbean part of the Kingdom.
The subsidies are intended for projects that contribute to awareness, processing and education around the slavery past. These include gatherings, cultural events, exhibitions, performances and educational projects. A requirement is that the initiatives benefit descendants of enslaved people and have a lasting impact on the community.
Subsidies range from a minimum of 25,000 to a maximum of 500,000 dollars. The current application round closes on 1 June at 17:00 Dutch time.
The subsidy scheme is part of the measures that followed the apology offered by the Dutch Prime Minister on 19 December 2022 for the Netherlands’ slavery past.
A total of over 29.3 million euros has been made available for the Caribbean part of the Kingdom. The scheme consists of eight application rounds spread over three years.
Applications are submitted through the subsidy portal of Uitvoering Van Beleid, part of the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. A separate website has also been set up for the Caribbean region under the name Legacy to Future Funds.
Information about the scheme is available in Dutch, English, Papiamentu and Papiamento.
