KRALENDIJK – The EKADK Foundation is distributing the music book Kantika di tur tempu pa semper to all schools on Bonaire. The book brings together the lyrics and melodies of traditional Bonairean songs that have been passed down through oral tradition.
The music book is published in two parts and includes background information on the origins of various folk songs. Some of the songs date back to the period of slavery, while others originate from the years following World War II. According to the initiators, each song tells its own story, rooted in events from everyday life.
Collaboration Between Multiple Partners
The project was made possible through a collaboration between author Denise de Jongh-Rekwest via publisher Request Publishing, the Public Entity of Bonaire (Department of Education and Welfare), SKAL, and EKADK. The Public Entity of Bonaire and SKAL commissioned the publication.
Lessons and Training Programs on the Way
EKADK’s involvement goes beyond distributing books. The foundation is working together with schools to develop lessons in which children learn to sing and play the traditional songs. Training sessions and activities for teachers and students are also planned, with schools receiving support in using the teaching materials and incorporating music and culture into their lessons.
The books will be distributed to all schools on Bonaire in the coming period. Kolegio San Bernardo and Kristu Bon Wardador have already received their first copies, presented by the author herself.
