
KRALENDIJK- A Human Rights Workshop held on Saturday, December 6, 2025, brought together residents interested in learning more about rights education and advocacy on the island. The event opened with remarks by James Finies, founder of the Bonaire Human Rights Organization (BHRO), setting the context for discussions on awareness and community participation.
During the workshop, Muhernan Fuerte PPP representatives Joseline Thielman en Phenice Frans-Piar were introduced as co-founders supporting BHRO’s efforts to broaden human rights information and representation among the local population.
The programme was organised under the theme “We Also Have Rights” in cooperation with United for Human Rights International and several community partners.
A notable presentation was given by BHRO President Davika Bissessar Shaw, who spoke about the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. She also announced the launch of BHRO’s Ambassadorship Program, allowing community members to pursue certification as Human Rights Ambassadors.
Participants took part in lectures, group work and certification components. The workshop concluded with the presentation of certificates to those who completed the advocacy module.
Five year initiative
The event also marked the start of BHRO’s five-year initiative aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, in particular Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, which BHRO previously highlighted alongside activities linked to the 80th UN General Assembly.
