THE BOTTOM – The Mount Scenery Tower Project on Saba has entered a new phase. Following two weeks of preparations, work has started on dismantling the existing tower on Mount Scenery, the project organization announced on Thursday.
According to the project team, all preparatory work has been completed to ensure the dismantling can be carried out safely while protecting the sensitive natural environment surrounding the site. The preparations were carried out in close cooperation with Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF).
Over the past weeks, around twenty-seven tons of waste material were removed from the mountain. The debris included outdated equipment from inside the buildings, steel and metal components, old gates, and other obsolete materials.
Specialized lifting system
To facilitate the dismantling process, the tower’s internal structure was completely cleared. This made room for the installation of a so-called “gin pole,” a mobile lifting system that allows contractor HANAB to carefully dismantle the tower section by section.
The first tower components have now been lowered, segmented, and prepared for helicopter transport. The materials are flown in helicopter baskets to a ship in Wells Bay and will then be transported to the Netherlands for further processing and disposal.
More flights expected
Additional helicopter flights are expected in the coming days, weather permitting. Once the dismantling phase is completed, HANAB will begin construction of the new tower.
