KRALENDIJK – Governor John Soliano has issued a communiqué clarifying the recent administrative developments on Bonaire and his role in them. The statement comes in response to the political unrest of recent months, during which calls were made from various sides for intervention in the island’s governance.
According to the governor, his position is independent and politically neutral. His role is to safeguard good governance and administrative integrity, but not to form a new government himself. That responsibility lies with the Island Council and the political parties.
The administrative situation changed on 31 March 2026, when the deputy island governors submitted their resignations. At the same time, it became known that the parties UPB, MPB and independent council member Serberie are working towards forming a new coalition. An emergency session of the Island Council has been scheduled for Thursday, 2 April, during which new commissioners can be nominated.
The governor emphasises that the Executive Council formally remains in office as long as the Island Council has not officially withdrawn its confidence. At the same time, he plays a role in overseeing cooperation and the proper functioning of the administration, both formally and through informal consultations.
For residents, nothing will change for the time being, according to Soliano. The public entity’s services will continue and ongoing matters will be handled as usual. The law is specifically designed to ensure administrative continuity, even in situations where commissioners step down.
New Executive Council
With Thursday’s planned session, the governor sees a clear path towards a transition to a new Executive Council. He stresses the importance of stability and cooperation in the administration, in the interest of the residents of Bonaire.
