KRALENDIJK - The criminal case Papaya, which concerns the murder of firefighter Sheldon J. on Saba, is being heard on the merits today by the Court of First Instance of Bonaire, St. Eustatius and Saba. The hearing is taking place on Bonaire and is expected to run from 9:00 a.m. until approximately 5:00 p.m.
The case has attracted considerable attention on Saba since the shooting last September, as serious violent crimes are rarely committed on the island. The Public Prosecution Service suspects Rudolfo V. v. H. (36) and Anthony N.W. (26) of involvement in the firefighter’s death.
At earlier procedural hearings, both suspects denied any involvement. However, according to the Public Prosecution Service, the investigation points toward a premeditated murder. The extensive case file includes, among other things, DNA evidence and video footage that prosecutors consider incriminating to the suspects.
The hearing is being held on Bonaire. Those on Saba who wish to follow the proceedings can do so via a live video link at the Community Center. A courtroom is also available on St. Maarten for family members, next of kin, and other interested parties.
