THE BOTTOM, Saba – Saba Island Governor Jocelyn Levenstone visited the summit of Mount Scenery on Saturday to inspect the newly completed Jonathan Johnson Tower, the radar installation that will enhance maritime surveillance across the northeastern Caribbean.
Levenstone was joined by Head of Public Order and Safety Walle Bos and Sherlon Hinkert, Liaison Officer for the Caribbean Cluster at the Ministry of Defence. HANAB project managers Peter Kok and François Dieckhaus guided the delegation through the project and explained the final stages of construction.
The visit came two days after the final section of the tower was successfully installed, marking the completion of a complex operation that required extensive logistical planning, including helicopter support.
The new radar tower is part of the modernization of radar infrastructure in the Dutch Caribbean. Once operational, it will improve monitoring of shipping activity around Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten, strengthening the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard’s ability to respond to incidents at sea.
Standing at approximately 870 metres above sea level, Mount Scenery is the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Governor Levenstone said the visit also provided an opportunity to recognize the dedication of the teams who completed the challenging project under demanding conditions.
