ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – The Statia Roots Festival officially began on Sunday with an opening ceremony held on the Museum Grounds and hosted by Taro Merkman. The event marked the start of six weeks filled with cultural activities celebrating the island’s Afro-Caribbean heritage.
The festival program includes music, dance, storytelling, culinary showcases, and historical reflections—designed to connect generations and spark dialogue about Statia’s rich past and future.
Commissioner Leerdam, speaking at the opening, described the festival as “a showcase to remind us who we are and [to] help us reconnect with our ancestral heritage.” She added, “The Statia Roots Festival is a celebration of strength, of heritage, and of our people’s resilience.”
Activities
The Statia Government, which partially sponsors the festival, expressed pride in supporting initiatives that preserve culture and strengthen community ties. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take part in the activities, running from 25 May through 1 July 2025.
