KRALENDIJK – On Wednesday, inspectors from the Directorate of Supervision and Enforcement of the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) carried out inspections at two supermarkets. During these inspections, multiple violations were identified concerning the sale of food products and product labeling.

At the first supermarket, the inspectors found food items on the shelves whose expiration dates had passed a considerable time ago. This is not allowed. According to the regulations in the BES Food Labeling Decree, Article 2, it is prohibited to sell food or beverages if the minimum durability date or the expiration date has passed.

At the second supermarket, the inspectors discovered that various products were not properly labeled. Some labels were missing entirely, while others were written in a language not permitted by law. By law, all labels must be clearly visible, easily readable, and indelible. The information must be available in at least Dutch, Papiamentu, English, or Spanish.

Products Confiscated

In both supermarkets, the products found to be in violation were confiscated. This measure was taken to protect public health and to prevent consumers from purchasing food products with insufficient or incorrect information.

The Directorate of Supervision and Enforcement emphasizes the importance of supermarkets complying with the rules. “This is essential to ensure the health and safety of all residents and visitors of Bonaire,” the Directorate stated.
