KRALENDIJK – On Tuesday evening, the Island Council of Bonaire rejected a motion from the Movementu di Pueblo Boneriano (MPB), which called for immediate measures to support the island’s construction sector.
The motion, submitted by MPB faction leader Hennyson Thielman, failed to receive sufficient support from the council.
It proposed, among other things, a concrete action plan for resuming the issuance of building permits before July 1, the establishment of a permanent dialogue platform for the construction sector, allocation of budget for public construction and social housing projects, and the acceleration of housing development in cooperation with Fundashon Cas Boneriano.
According to Thielman, rejecting these proposals is “irresponsible” and shows that the coalition is “abandoning the construction sector and Bonaire.” The MPB faction expressed strong criticism and warned of economic damage and job losses in the sector.
Too Much, Too Fast
The debate takes place amid growing public concern over spatial development on Bonaire. Many residents feel that too much construction has taken place too quickly in recent years, while at the same time, questions are being raised about recent complaints from the construction sector regarding stalled projects and delayed permits.
