
THE BOTTOM, Saba - The Saba Conservation Foundation (SCF) received Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten during his recent visit to Saba, using the occasion to highlight the island’s conservation priorities and the need for structural funding for nature management in the Caribbean Netherlands.
During the visit, SCF presented information on Saba’s biodiversity, national parks and ongoing conservation work, emphasizing the importance of protected areas for tourism, climate resilience and community wellbeing. Jetten also visited the SCF Research Center, where coral reef restoration research is being conducted in cooperation with Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences.
SCF manages the Saba National Marine Park and Mount Scenery National Park and also shares responsibility for the Saba Bank marine area. According to the organization, these responsibilities continue to place pressure on staffing and financial resources.
Joint letter
During the meeting, Jetten was presented with a joint letter calling for structural funding for nature and park management across the BES islands. The letter was supported by SCF, the Dutch Caribbean Nature Alliance and WWF Netherlands.
