KRALENDIJK – A petition addressed to the Standing Committee on Health, Welfare and Sport calls for swift improvements to healthcare on Bonaire. The document proposes three concrete measures to improve the quality, accessibility and humanity of care on the island.
The initiators first advocate for the introduction of the BSN (citizen service number) in healthcare on Bonaire as of January 1, 2027. According to the petition, this should lead to improved administrative processes, greater privacy protection and a safer integration with the Dutch healthcare system.
In addition, the signatories are calling for Bonaireans to be given the option of taking out supplementary insurance with Dutch health insurers. This would allow residents to more easily access medical care, both locally and internationally.
Finally, the petition calls for reforms at the Caribbean Netherlands Healthcare Insurance Office (ZVK). Among other things, the petitioners are seeking greater transparency, clearer procedures and a more humane approach towards patients who depend on medical care and referrals abroad.
The petition was received by the Island Council of Bonaire on May 7, 2026.
