WILLEMSTAD, Curaçao – Curaçao International Airport (CUR) has officially started a major mid-expansion project focused on improving outbound passenger operations as the airport continues to experience record passenger growth.

The project, led by Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) in collaboration with Curaçao Airport Holding (CAH), is expected to continue through December 2026 and aims to expand terminal capacity, improve passenger flow and modernize several operational areas for departing travelers.

According to CAP, the expansion will include additional boarding pass scanners, expanded immigration and security screening capacity, preparations for future e-Gates, an extra passenger screening lane, a VIP fast-track lane and improved transit facilities for connecting passengers. The airport also plans to create additional outbound terminal space to accommodate increasing passenger volumes.

Construction activities began this week with partial fencing along sections of the Commercial Boulevard. Several food and beverage outlets, including Cinnabon and Auntie Anne’s, closed their ground floor locations on Sunday to make way for the redevelopment, although some brands will continue operating upstairs in the departures area and are expected to return later with updated concepts.

Airport officials said the Check-in Hall and key airport services will remain operational throughout the construction period and that efforts will be made to minimize inconvenience for travelers.

Long term strategy

CAP CEO Ricardo Hernández said the project forms part of CUR’s long-term strategy to prepare the airport for future growth while improving the overall passenger experience. CAH Managing Director Wilhelmus Ignacio described the expansion as an important investment in Curaçao’s connectivity, tourism sector and economic development.
