Saba Authorities Urge Residents to Check Camera Footage in Search for Missing Hiker

THE BOTTOM, Saba – Authorities on Saba have issued an urgent appeal to residents to check security camera footage from Wednesday, May 13, as the search continues for missing hiker Erik Matthijsen.

According to Public Entity Saba, Matthijsen was last seen around 11:00 a.m. in the Well’s Bay area, wearing a grey T-shirt, black shorts, and carrying a black backpack. Residents in the Well’s Bay area and The Bottom are being asked to review any footage recorded between 11:00 a.m. and midnight and contact 911 if they may have seen him or provided him with a ride.

Search operations resumed at daybreak on Friday, with teams combing the Middle Island trail and surrounding rugged terrain. Specially trained search dogs from the St. Martin Fire Department have also arrived on island to assist in the operation.

On Thursday, helicopters were deployed alongside ground search teams as efforts intensified. Authorities noted that Friday marked 72 hours since Matthijsen was last seen heading toward the Well’s Bay hiking area.
