THE BOTTOM, Saba – A motion presented by Island Council member Vito Charles calling for continued advocacy toward affordable and reliable air connectivity for Saba has received unanimous support within the Island Council.
The motion, presented during a recent Island Council meeting, urges the Executive Council to continue pursuing a Public Service Obligation (PSO) aimed at addressing ongoing transportation challenges affecting the island and improving affordability and reliability of regional travel connections.
All five Island Council members voted in favor of the motion, including the three members of the ruling Windward Islands People’s Movement (WIPM) as well as the two opposition members representing The Party for Progress, Equality and Prosperity (PEP).
The motion relates to the position paper on affordable and reliable connectivity to and from Saba and comes amid growing regional discussions surrounding high airfare prices and transportation reliability within the SSS islands.
Pressure on residents
Supporters of the motion argue that the current cost of regional air travel continues to place pressure on residents and negatively impacts healthcare access, education, tourism and the wider economy.
