KRALENDIJK — The Bonaire Food Bank Foundation currently supports approximately 345 households (around 1,400 individuals) with monthly food packages. Through its ‘Support a Family’ project, the foundation is calling on the business community to sponsor a family: for $990 per year, one vulnerable family receives a package every month for twelve months.
Board chairman Maarten Caljouw announced the project at the Rotary Club Bonaire. The packages contain canned goods, laundry detergent, fresh eggs, bread and vegetables from Venezuela; families with young children also receive diapers and baby food. Additional packages are distributed at the start of the school year and at Christmas.
The annual cost of the packages runs into the hundreds of thousands of dollars. Part of this is covered by a contribution from the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK); the remainder comes from private and corporate donations.
The Rotary Club Bonaire is itself sponsoring a family and is encouraging local businesses to do the same.
