HONOLULU, Hawai‘i - Representatives of the Statia Government and the St. Eustatius Utility Company (STUCO) recently participated in the Blue Planet Alliance Fellowship Programme in Hawai‘i, where island governments and energy professionals discussed renewable energy, energy security, and climate resilience.

The programme, held from May 9 to 16 in Honolulu, brought together representatives from island communities around the world to exchange knowledge and experiences related to the transition away from fossil fuels.

According to the Statia Government, St. Eustatius was recognised as the first island within the Dutch Caribbean to participate in the fellowship programme. During the closing sessions, delegates presented Statia’s roadmap towards achieving 100 percent renewable energy by 2030.

The island’s renewable energy ambitions form part of the Clean Energy for European Union Islands (CE4EUI) 30 for 2030 programme, which was presented earlier this year in Brussels by Bonaire, Statia, and Saba.

The fellowship included workshops, technical sessions, policy discussions, and field visits focused on renewable energy development, financing, and practical implementation strategies for small island communities.

Stronger international partnership

According to the government, participation in the programme also helped strengthen international partnerships and provided opportunities to learn from other islands facing similar energy and climate-related challenges.
