KRALENDIJK – On the first day of the new year 2026, Bonaire will once again be marked by the celebration of the traditional Maskarada. The festive kickoff takes place on New Year’s Day at 9:00 AM at the lieutenant governor’s residence, after which the colorful Maskarada group will spread across the island.
Following the official opening, the Maskarada group visits various neighborhoods and locations on Bonaire, including cultural institutions and residential areas. During these visits, songs, dances, and humorous sketches are performed, featuring stories from traditional island life of the past.
At the start of the celebration, the group is traditionally received by the Public Entity Bonaire. On behalf of the executive council, the symbolic barrel of rum is presented, an important ritual within the Maskarada tradition.
The Maskarada has been an essential part of Bonaire’s cultural heritage for generations. In a period when the island welcomes many visitors and new residents, this annual celebration emphasizes the importance of preserving and passing on local culture and identity.
The complete schedule with visiting times and locations for New Year’s Day and the following days can be found in the official Maskarada program.
