KRALENDIJK – After several days of rising tensions and speculation, calm has returned to the Scholengemeenschap Bonaire (SGB) at the end of the week. The unrest was triggered by a critical inspection report and the threat of dismissal of VMBO director Francis Pieter.

It now appears that the planned dismissal will not go ahead. Instead, the school will adopt a new leadership structure. The current two-person leadership team will be replaced by a three-member team, which will include Pieter.

The breakthrough came following the intervention of former acting Island Governor Reynold (Nolly) Oleana as mediator. In addition to the school’s management, members of the Supervisory Board were also involved in the intensive negotiations. After three days of discussions, the parties reached an agreement on Friday that all sides could accept.

In an internal message to the VMBO unit staff, the Executive Board expressed regret over how the situation unfolded. “It should not have been handled this way,” the message read.

Unit director Francis Pieter described the past period as “extremely difficult – both personally and professionally.” He added, “I have dedicated myself to education for 35 years with heart and soul, and I feel deeply connected to the team and our students.” Pieter also expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the talks: “I am a supporter of change, collaboration, and support.”

He also shared his appreciation for the VMBO team: “I’m proud of the VMBO team – your dedication, perseverance, and commitment.”

Next steps

While an agreement is now in place, some work remains. The new leadership structure still needs to be formalized, and the division of responsibilities must be worked out.

Francis Pieter will resume his duties as VMBO unit director on Monday. According to the agreement, he will remain part of the leadership team until his retirement.
