Youth mental health study launched on Statia with participation of nearly 200 students

ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius - A large-scale research project focusing on trauma experiences and mental health among youth in the Caribbean Netherlands has officially started on St. Eustatius.

The “Be You” study is being carried out by Mental Health Caribbean in collaboration with Amsterdam UMC and the Expertise Center Education Care (EOZ). The project aims to gain greater insight into the mental wellbeing of young people in the Caribbean context and to support the development of future care and support programs.

According to the organizations involved, 199 young people on St. Eustatius have already participated in the study by sharing information about their experiences and mental wellbeing.

Mental Health Caribbean stated that the contribution of the students is considered important in helping researchers better understand the needs and challenges facing youth in the region.

The organization also highlighted the role of local partners in supporting the project, including the Public Entity St. Eustatius, the Gwendoline van Putten School and the ECE.

Broader efforts

The initiative forms part of broader efforts aimed at improving mental health awareness, strengthening support systems and reducing stigma surrounding mental health issues among young people in the Caribbean Netherlands.
