KRALENDIJK – Tourism Corporation Bonaire (TCB) has named Johan van Blerk, Everon ‘Tonky’ Frans and Nella Martinus the ‘Bonaire Friends’ for September. The trio was nominated by visitors who appreciated the hospitality and dedication of local residents during their stay on the island.
With the ‘Bonaire Friends’ initiative, TCB recognises people who, according to tourists’ experiences, make a positive contribution to Bonaire’s tourism sector.
Johan van Blerk, founder of Terra Barra Native Garden, was nominated by Dutch visitor Dirk Vink. During a visit, Vink and his son were impressed by the work of Van Blerk and his volunteers, who are restoring native vegetation and bringing more greenery to the island.
Everon ‘Tonky’ Frans, a windsurfing instructor at Dunkerbeck Pro Center in Sorobon, was nominated by Bo van der Pijl. His friendliness and the enthusiasm with which he introduced family members to windsurfing made their holiday extra special.
Nella Martinus, an employee of Divi Flamingo Beach Resort, was nominated by Miranda Romney. During her first visit to Bonaire, Romney received tips from Martinus about the local culture and lesser-known places on the island. They are still in touch.
According to TCB director Elesiër Angel, the three ‘Bonaire Friends’ show the important role residents play in visitors’ experience.
