KRALENDIJK – Fifteen journalists and five teams of two journalists each have been awarded a grant by the Fund for Special Journalistic Projects (Fonds BJP) for journalistic projects on the Caribbean islands within the Kingdom. Three investigations will be carried out on Bonaire. Investigations will also be conducted on St. Eustatius, Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten.

One of the selected projects is Too Young for Violence? An Investigation into Juvenile Crime and Weapon Use on Bonaire. The investigation focuses on why young people are becoming involved in violent incidents and weapon use at ever younger ages, which societal factors play a role, and to what extent the situation on Bonaire resembles that in the European Netherlands.

Societal issues

The selected projects also address other societal issues. For example, work is under way on a documentary about food supply on the islands and on Drinken en rijden op het eiland (Drinking and Driving on the Island), a documentary about drunk driving.

With these grants, Fonds BJP aims to give journalists the space to carry out time-consuming, in-depth journalistic projects. The investigations are meant to shed light on topics that go beyond day-to-day news coverage.

Do you have information, experiences, or tips about juvenile crime and weapon use on Bonaire? Or do you know people who would like to share their story (anonymously, if preferred)? Tip the newsroom.
