GUSTAVIA, St. Barths – Residents of St. Barths are facing several days without running water after a major infrastructure failure occurred on Saturday morning, June 13.
A water reservoir collapsed at a facility operated by SIDEM, the company responsible for the production and distribution of drinking water on the island. While no injuries were reported, the collapse caused extensive damage to critical infrastructure, including an electrical installation and a fuel pipeline serving key facilities.
The incident has forced a complete shutdown of water production and distribution, affecting all subscribers across the island. Authorities have warned that repairs are expected to take several days, leaving residents and businesses to cope with a prolonged disruption of service.
The situation is further complicated by damage to fuel distribution infrastructure supplying facilities operated by EDF and Rubis, as well as the island’s marine fuel station at the commercial port. Officials say this could have wider implications for the territory’s energy infrastructure.
A crisis meeting was convened shortly after the collapse. Territorial Council President Xavier Lédée described the situation as critical, noting that crews must first secure the area and assess the damage before repairs can begin.
Limit consumption
As a precaution, authorities have established a large safety perimeter around the site, including the closure of a nearby public beach. Residents are being urged to limit their consumption of both water and electricity to essential needs only while emergency response and repair efforts continue.
