THE BOTTOM, Saba – The Saba Conservation Foundation reports encouraging early results from the ReLeaf Saba reforestation project, which began in 2023. According to the organization, trees planted two years ago near the gas station are now thriving.

Additional plantings followed in February 2024 along the road to the fuel station, where the young trees are developing alongside coconut trees previously placed by the Agricultural Station. The largest effort took place on Thais Hill, where more than 750 trees were planted between June and November 2024. Growth in that area is already visible from the road.

The project aims to restore native vegetation and, over time, create a multi-layered forest that can support a wider range of animal species. Besides improving biodiversity, reforestation can also help stabilize soil and reduce erosion.

ReLeaf Saba

ReLeaf Saba is carried out by the Saba Conservation Foundation in cooperation with the St. Eustatius National Parks Foundation (STENAPA). The initiative forms part of a broader regional program supported by RESEMBID and financed by the European Union.
