KRALENDIJK – The iconic Greenpeace ship Rainbow Warrior has docked in Bonaire’s port and will remain until 1 October to draw attention to the Climate Case Bonaire. Open days will be held on 27 and 28 September, giving the public the chance to tour the vessel and learn more about the case.

Eight residents of Bonaire, together with Greenpeace Netherlands, have filed a lawsuit against the Dutch State, demanding stronger climate action. The case will be heard on 7 and 8 October in The Hague. The plaintiffs argue that Bonaire is already suffering from extreme heat, drought, flooding, and threats to coral reefs, and that the government must act faster to reduce CO2 emissions and help protect the island.

Symbolic

Director Marieke Vellekoop of Greenpeace Netherlands called the presence of the Rainbow Warrior on Bonaire “symbolic of courage, protest and solidarity” and hopes for a strong local turnout during the open boat days.
