KRALENDIJK – The number of infectious disease reports on Bonaire remained relatively low in the second quarter of 2026 (Q2). This is reported by GGD Bonaire / Salubridat Públiko in its latest quarterly update. The health service continues to monitor infectious diseases and potential risks to the island throughout the year.

Vessel inspections

In Q2, GGD Bonaire / Salubridat Públiko received 39 health declarations from (cruise) ships that called at Bonaire. The number of sick passengers on board was limited on most vessels. In the region, outbreaks were reported on several cruise ships, including a norovirus outbreak on the Caribbean Princess. This ship did not visit Bonaire.

Fewer flu complaints

The number of people visiting their GP in April, May and June with flu or cold symptoms was lower than in the same period in previous years. Laboratory testing showed that cold viruses and RSV were the most common findings.

STI testing and mosquito-borne diseases

The GGD sexual health clinic saw 50 clients in the second quarter, of whom 45 were tested for STIs. A total of 72 clients have been tested this year; 15 cases of chlamydia and one case of gonorrhoea were identified.

The number of mosquito-borne disease cases such as dengue and chikungunya also remained low. The vector control team continues to investigate reports of mosquito nuisance and combats potential breeding sites where necessary.

More travel consultations

More and more travellers are making use of the travel advice and vaccinations offered by GGD Bonaire. In Q2, 218 travel consultations took place, more than twice as many as in the first quarter. Many consultations concerned travel to destinations including Colombia, Suriname, Panama, Brazil and Peru.
