WILLEMSTAD - The NOS will be giving extensive coverage of the Summer Carnival in Rotterdam at the end of July, a two-day Caribbean-flavoured event that has been on the UNESCO list of Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2023. The public broadcaster will stream the Street Parade live and produce two evening programmes about the festival, which this year is being held for the forty-second time.

Livestream and two TV programmes

On Saturday 25 July, a livestream of the Street Parade will be available from approximately 12:30 to 15:00 via NOS.nl, the NOS app, NPO 1 Extra and NPO Start. In the evening, two broadcasts will follow on NPO 1, also available worldwide via BVN. The first programme, from 19:33 to 19:54, covers the build-up to the carnival, including the election of the King and Queen, the Children’s Carnival and the Battle of the Drums, in which three brass bands compete for the title. After the NOS News at 20:00, the second programme runs from 20:28 to 21:19, focusing on the Street Parade itself, with footage of the procession and reports from participating groups.

Presentation

Commentary during the livestream and presentation of the evening broadcasts are in the hands of Evita Mac-nack and Larisa da Veiga, who was crowned Summer Carnival Queen two years ago.

About the Summer Carnival

The Summer Carnival in Rotterdam revolves around the Street Parade, a hours-long Caribbean dance procession through the city centre that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. Around twenty-five carnival groups and two thousand five hundred dancers take part in the parade. Rotterdam has a large community with Caribbean roots, including people of Curaçaoan heritage, for whom the event is a yearly moment of connection with island culture.
