KRALENDIJK – The Lieutenant Governor of Bonaire has established a new policy for firearms permits. The temporary freeze on new applications has been lifted: residents can once again apply for a permit to import, export, or possess a firearm for permitted purposes.
The new policy sets stricter safety requirements to promote responsible firearm ownership and enhance public safety on Bonaire. It was developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders and in cooperation with the Bonaire Triangle, the consultative body comprising the police, the public prosecutor’s office, and the local government. The policy applies exclusively to legal firearms possession and is separate from the issue of illegal weapons.
Those wishing to apply for a permit must, among other things, submit a medical certificate, demonstrate knowledge of and safe handling of firearms, and comply with the rules regarding permitted weapon types and ammunition. In addition, specific rules apply to air rifles, airsoft, and paintball weapons to prevent misuse.
A permit is valid for one year and must be renewed annually. Renewal applications can be submitted between 1 September and 15 October 2026. Another new feature is that a request for a Certificate of Good Conduct (VOG) can now be submitted simultaneously with a firearms permit application.
Unregistered weapon? Turn it in
Anyone in possession of a firearm without a valid permit, or with an expired permit, can hand it in at the police station until 31 August 2026. After that date, possessing a weapon without a valid permit may result in criminal prosecution.
