NASSAU, The Bahamas – Caribbean leaders have called for stronger regional cooperation and greater investment to accelerate the transition to renewable energy, describing it as essential for the region’s economic resilience and long-term development.

The appeal was made during a seminar on energy transition at the Caribbean Development Bank’s 56th Annual Meeting of the Board of Governors. Government officials, regulators, utilities and development partners agreed that Caribbean countries should move beyond isolated national projects and instead develop coordinated regional initiatives capable of attracting private investment.

Participants stressed the need for modern, climate-resilient electricity grids, stronger technical capacity, and financing mechanisms that make renewable energy projects more attractive to investors. They also highlighted the importance of involving young people in shaping the region’s energy future.

Reduce dependence on fossil fuels

Speakers noted that greater use of renewable energy would help reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, stabilise electricity costs, create green jobs and strengthen the Caribbean’s resilience to economic and climate-related shocks.
