Public Entity Saba Explains Decision Following Euthanasia of Stray Dog

THE BOTTOM – Public Entity Saba has defended its decision to euthanize a stray dog in The Bottom, saying the move came after months of unsuccessful efforts to capture the animal using humane methods.

According to a government statement, veterinarians and animal handlers attempted to sedate the dog with a dart gun and gain its trust through regular feeding, but the animal remained too wary to be safely captured.

Authorities said growing concerns about public safety ultimately led to the decision, which was made under the 2013 Dog Ordinance. A veterinarian was involved in the planning and present during the operation. The dog was later scanned for a microchip, but none was found.

Although the dog wore a collar, no owner came forward while it was being monitored, and veterinary records could not identify one.

Public Entity acknowledged the community’s emotional response and said decisions involving animal welfare are never taken lightly. It also pledged to continue working with partners to improve the management of stray animals while urging residents to keep the public debate respectful.
