KRALENDIJK – Diesel on Bonaire will cost 40 US cents more per liter from Friday, October 23, the Public Entity of Bonaire announced. The price rises from USD 1.32 to USD 1.72, an increase of more than 30 percent, due to developments on the international market and higher fuel purchase prices.

Gasoline (Mogas95) goes up by 12 cents to USD 1.76 per liter. The large gas cylinder (100 lbs) rises by USD 3 to USD 57 and the small one (20 lbs) by USD 1 to USD 12. Kerosene stays at USD 0.81 per liter.

The increase follows a price drop on August 28. Diesel and gasoline are now more expensive than before that drop, when diesel cost USD 1.38 and gasoline USD 1.70.

Diesel fuels trucks, construction equipment, buses and boats, so the increase will also be felt in the tourism sector and could push up the cost of excursions, transport and groceries. In March, the Executive Council already warned that residents’ purchasing power was under pressure and asked The Hague to lower the excise duty on gasoline. Bonaire cannot do this itself, as these taxes are set in the BES Tax Act.

The price table also shows that the general consumption tax (ABB) on diesel rises from about 9 to 12 cents per liter.
