ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius - The Sint Eustatius Tourism Development Foundation (STDF) has presented a set of proposed tourism service standards aimed at improving consistency and professionalism across the island’s hospitality sector ahead of the 250th anniversary of the First Salute later this year.

The recommendations are based on a tourism service standards survey conducted by the George Washington University School of Business and focus on hotels and accommodations, restaurants, tour operators, and transportation services.

According to STDF, the proposed system would introduce a dual-tier framework consisting of mandatory baseline requirements alongside voluntary higher-level service benchmarks intended to encourage operators to improve quality and competitiveness.

The report found that visitor sentiment toward Statia is generally positive, particularly in relation to diving, local culture, and hospitality. Tour operators were identified as the island’s strongest-performing sector. However, the study also pointed to inconsistencies in service delivery, particularly within hotels, restaurants, and transportation services.

Among the proposed measures are licensing requirements, public health and safety standards, insurance obligations, and operational guidelines for tourism-related businesses. Voluntary standards would include areas such as housekeeping response times, customer service benchmarks, multilingual capabilities, punctuality, and digital booking or payment options.

Opportunity

STDF Director Maya Pandt described the report as an opportunity to strengthen the island’s tourism product through more consistent service standards and improved visitor experiences.

The recommendations come as Statia prepares for activities surrounding the 250th anniversary of the First Salute on November 16, commemorating the island’s historic recognition of the independence of the United States in 1776.
