KRALENDIJK – On Tuesday, June 17, the Climate Table project team officially launched the first series of neighborhood conversations on climate change. The initial session took place at the Amboina Community Center and was aimed at residents of Tera Kòrá and the surrounding areas.

Although attendance was limited, a valuable and in-depth discussion emerged. Participants spoke about how the climate used to be, the importance of well-designed dams, and solutions that enable residents to collect rainwater at home. The session was led by Mr. Nolly Oleana, chair of the project team.

On Wednesday, June 18, a special Climate Table session was held for youth. Students from grades 7 and 8 of the primary schools De Pelikaan, Rayo di Solo, Kolegio San Luis Bertran Rincon, Het Koraal, as well as students from the Liseo, engaged in a dialogue with the project team about climate change on Bonaire. It turned into an inspiring event in which the youth actively participated and shared their concerns.

One key point raised multiple times was that climate change is rarely discussed at home, even though it affects everyone. The students also noted that, in their view, not enough is currently being done to truly prepare Bonaire for the impacts of climate change.

Upcoming Conversations

The neighborhood sessions will continue in the coming weeks at various locations: on June 24 at the Nikiboko Community Center, on July 3 at Sociedad San Antonio de Padua in Rincon, on July 8 at the Nort Saliña Community Center, on July 9 at Club Avanti, and finally on July 14 again at the Amboina Community Center.
