MIAMI/CAP-HAÏTIEN – A proposed new airline initiative operating under the name “Air Haiti” is drawing growing attention online following livestream interviews and social media discussions about possible future flights between Fort Lauderdale and Cap-Haïtien.

The project recently gained visibility through Haitian media personality Guy Wewe, who hosted what was described as a discussion with individuals involved in the planned relaunch. A relatively polished website linked to the initiative has also appeared online, featuring Airbus A320 aircraft in Air Haiti livery and references to future international operations targeting the Haitian diaspora market.

Despite the professional presentation, however, many important details remain unclear or unconfirmed. There appears to be no publicly visible evidence so far of an active operating certificate, confirmed aircraft fleet, ticket sales, published schedules or FAA approvals tied to a functioning airline operation.

Questions also remain about who is behind the initiative, whether aircraft would be operated directly or through wet-lease arrangements and how far any certification process has progressed.

The lack of clarity has fueled skepticism among some aviation observers, particularly given Haiti’s ongoing instability and longstanding aviation oversight challenges. Haiti does not currently appear on the FAA’s active International Aviation Safety Assessment list of Category 1 countries, a status generally required for airlines operating direct scheduled services to the United States under their own national oversight framework.

The proposed Fort Lauderdale–Cap-Haïtien route itself is nevertheless commercially plausible, as Cap-Haïtien has become increasingly important as an alternative gateway amid continuing instability in Port-au-Prince and because of the large Haitian diaspora community in South Florida.

Historical significance

The Air Haïti name also carries historical significance. The original carrier operated from the late 1960s until the early 1990s and was once among Haiti’s best-known airlines.

For now, however, it remains uncertain whether the current initiative represents a fully developing airline project or an early-stage concept still far from operational launch.
