Heading out on the water means knowing you can call for help when it counts. But did you know you may only operate the VHF radio on board if you hold a valid radio operator’s certificate?

The Dutch Authority for Digital Infrastructure (Rijksinspectie Digitale Infrastructuur, RDI) oversees the use of radio frequencies in the Caribbean Netherlands. On 26 and 27 November 2026, the RDI will hold exams for the Basic VHF Certificate on St. Eustatius and Saba. This certificate is required for anyone operating a VHF radio installation on board a boat or at a (restricted) coastal station.

The exam fee is USD 28. To register, send an email to bes@rdi.nl with the keyword “Radio-exams”, stating your name, address, email address and phone number. Mind the deadlines: on Saba you can apply until 2 November, on St. Eustatius until 5 November 2026.

Whether you fish, dive, run charters or simply love being out at sea, a valid certificate means you can communicate safely and by the rules. Questions? Call the RDI at (+599) 717 3140.

More information is available on the RDI exam page.
