KRALENDIJK – The Public Entity Bonaire (OLB) has decided to establish a language institute that will support multilingual policy and strengthen the use of Papiamentu in education, government and society.
The institute will bring together knowledge and expertise on Papiamentu and promote cooperation between schools, government and civil society organizations. One of its tasks is to contribute to the goal set out in the intergovernmental agreements: from 2030 onwards, no child should leave school without being able to read and write in Papiamentu.
According to the OLB, achieving this goal requires the commitment of schools and teachers, but also of families, civil society organizations and the media. The emphasis is on literacy and the consistent use of the official spelling. The announcement does not yet provide clarity on when the institute will actually get off the ground.
