KRALENDIJK — Hiking group Chantiwawa is organising a long-distance hike of 50 kilometres on Sunday, 6 December. The announcement comes three months in advance, giving participants ample time to prepare for what promises to be no easy feat. Chantiwawa is a group of adventurous hikers founded under the wings of FuHiKuBo, the Foundation for Historical Cultural Bonaire.

The hike starts at 4:00 a.m. at the Willemstoren, also known as ‘Torto di Sùit’ (southern tower), and ends at the Malmok lighthouse in Washington National Park, a historic lighthouse that was never put into service. According to Chantiwawa’s calculations, the first hikers are expected to reach the finish line between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.

Along the way, Chantiwawa and INDEBON will provide water, fruit and soup for those taking on the challenge. In addition to consulting with INDEBON for support and advice, the organisation also spoke with STINAPA, as the final section of the route passes through the national park.

This is not the first time the hike has been organised: some twenty to twenty-five years ago, the same walk was completed, though via a different route, through Slagbaai and Playa Frans Slagbaai.

Interested participants can register in the coming weeks via WhatsApp at phone number +599-7005964. Early registration is recommended, as the number of participants is capped at one hundred. The registration fee is $20.
