KRALENDIJK – The executive council is currently investigating which buses are suitable for the future public transport system on Bonaire. Buses used in The Hague and on Aruba are being considered. Nothing has been ordered yet.
The state of affairs regarding public transport will be discussed on Thursday during a meeting of the standing committee on Space and Development of the Island Council. Why exactly the systems in The Hague and Aruba are being examined, and which options are being considered, is not yet known.
State Secretary for Kingdom Relations and Effective Governance Eric van der Burg previously stated that he understands from the local government that the first bus must be running by early 2027. He also indicated that there is contact with HTM, the public transport company in the greater The Hague region.
Van der Burg will visit Bonaire again in October. He has previously made clear that he wants to see progress on the introduction of public transport. The question is whether the island government will be able to present a concrete implementation plan during his visit. A definitive choice of buses has not yet been made.
