KRALENDIJK – The Public Entity Bonaire (PEB) has begun tackling underground fire hotspots at the Lagun landfill site this week. The work is being carried out in cooperation with Selibon and the contracted waste management specialist Afvalzorg. The hotspots are remnants of previous fires at the location and, despite their limited size, still pose a risk to safety and the environment.

On Tuesday the plan was presented during a Town Hall Meeting in Jeugdhuis Jong Bonaire with local residents and stakeholders. Attendees were provided with up-to-date information on the planned activities and were given the opportunity to ask questions about the approach.

Earlier inspections identified approximately 15 hotspots using temperature measurements and infrared cameras. The fires are being addressed in a safe and controlled manner between 8 AM and 3 PM to minimize disturbance to the surrounding area. Work begins near the residential side of the site and will proceed step by step toward the landfill entrance. The method includes excavation, targeted water extinguishing, and sealing with diabase rock.

Structural improvements

In addition to extinguishing the fire hotspots, OLB is working on long-term improvements in waste management to prevent future incidents. Special attention is being given to the faster processing or safe storage of flammable waste, such as tires and plastics.
