KRALENDIJK – A new law establishing rules for the implementation of international nuclear safeguards treaties on Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba is one step closer. The Council of State has no substantive objections to the bill and advises that it be submitted to the House of Representatives.
The bill in question is the Implementation Act on Nuclear Safeguards Treaties BES. The law is intended to ensure that international agreements on the supervision of nuclear material can also be enforced within the public bodies of Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba.
The Council of State issued its advice on 15 July. According to the advice, the bill gives no cause for substantive comments. However, a number of minor technical amendments have been made to both the bill and the accompanying explanatory memorandum.
Minister of Foreign Affairs T.B.W. Berendsen subsequently forwarded the revised proposal on 24 August with a request to present the bill to the House of Representatives.
The law does not mean that all issues surrounding radioactive substances, nuclear safety and radioactive waste in the Caribbean Netherlands have thereby been resolved. The current proposal focuses specifically on the implementation of nuclear safeguards treaties.
The House of Representatives must now proceed with the further consideration of the bill.
