KRALENDIJK – Cooperative Piskabon launched a series of training sessions on Tuesday, September 22, for fishers and representatives of cooperatives on Bonaire. The program runs for six days, spread over two weeks, with sessions of three hours per day.
The first evening focused on the functioning of cooperatives. Raymond Gericho and Rudney Monte explained what membership of a cooperative entails, with special attention to the rights and obligations of members. According to Piskabon, there is a need for greater knowledge on this subject in order to strengthen the organizations that work in the interest of their members.
Piskabon aims to develop a collective platform for cooperativism on Bonaire, in which organizations can support and collaborate with one another. Bonaire Platinum was one of the organizations present at the informational evening, represented by Sherwin Pourier and Egbert Janga. Piskabon has indicated that the idea of a joint platform will be developed further.
The remaining sessions will focus on training and development for fishers as well as marketing. To contribute to the program, organizations including STINAPA, Supervision and Enforcement, the Veterinary Service, LVV, RDI, and the Red Cross have been invited.
Government support
Piskabon organized a similar program last year. The current training receives support from the Public Entity of Bonaire and is part of its responsibilities in the areas of information, preparation, and member education, as stipulated in the agreement between the government and the cooperative.
