THE BOTTOM – Jonathan Johnson, who has served as Gezaghebber (Island Governor) of Saba since 2007, announced on Tuesday that he will not seek reappointment when his current term ends next year. Johnson made the announcement on the 17th anniversary of his appointment, stating that “there is a time for everything,” quoting Ecclesiastes chapter 3.
In letters sent to King Willem-Alexander, State Secretary for Kingdom Relations the Acting Kingdom Representative, and both the Island Council and Executive Council, Johnson expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the island for nearly two decades.
Reflecting on his time in office, Johnson acknowledged both personal and professional milestones — from gaining a family to the passing of his parents in 2019 and 2021. He emphasized his continued commitment during his final year in office, pledging to serve in the best interest of Saba and its people.
“I have been extremely fortunate to be supported by family, friends and the Saban community,” he wrote. “I thank you all and look forward to what we can achieve together.”
