ORANJESTAD, St. Eustatius – The Fire Department on St. Eustatius is urging residents and visitors to take extra precautions as prolonged dry conditions increase the risk of fires on the island.

The department says it is closely monitoring the drought conditions and is particularly warning against activities that could ignite dry vegetation.

Residents are advised not to discard cigarette butts outdoors and to make sure cigarettes are fully extinguished. Extra caution is also recommended when barbecuing, including keeping barbecues away from dry vegetation and other flammable materials.

The Fire Department is also advising people to avoid open burning where possible and never leave barbecues or open fires unattended.

For information or advice, the St. Eustatius Fire Department can be reached at +599 318 2726. In case of an emergency, residents should call 911.
