Maintenance on apron started at Flamingo Airport Bonaire

KRALENDIJK – Bonaire International Airport (BIA) is carrying out maintenance works on the widebody platform from August 23 to 28. The entire surface designated for aircraft movements will be given a new layer of asphalt, whereby the existing top layer is removed and replaced. The works represent an investment of approximately 1.4 million dollars.

Over the years, cracks have developed in various spots in the asphalt, as a result of the load the widebody platform receives, mainly from heavy aircraft. BIA continuously monitors the technical condition of the platform and carries out immediate repairs where necessary, to prevent further damage and the formation of loose material – also known as Foreign Object Debris (FOD). In recent years, the number of surface repairs has gradually increased. Therefore, the time has come to carry out maintenance on a larger scale and to renew the entire top layer of the widebody platform. These works guarantee the quality and safety of the platform for the years to come.

The works will be carried out over six days and nights to minimize the impact on daily airport operations. The airport will remain fully operational during this period. During the works, widebody aircraft will be parked on the platform in front of the terminal.

Further Development

In addition, BIA is working on plans for the further development and expansion of the widebody platform area. These plans are currently being finalized and will be implemented in phases over the coming years. However, the planned development does not eliminate the need to carry out the current maintenance works now, given the current state of the platform. This contributes to a safe and reliable widebody platform for the period ahead.
