KRALENDIJK – The Public Entity of Bonaire (OLB) and the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) signed an addendum to the administrative agreement on June 19, regarding the approach to Selibon Lagun. With this, both parties reaffirm their joint commitment to implementing previously made agreements on sustainable and future-proof waste management on Bonaire.

The trigger was an independent KPMG investigation into Selibon, which concluded that additional measures and investments are needed to make the waste management system safe, sustainable, and financially viable. A total investment of approximately $40.1 million is required for the period 2026–2028.

According to the OLB, important steps have already been taken to safeguard the continuity of Selibon, including investments in new equipment and improvements to operations. For 2026, the island government is making an additional $4.4 million available through a budget amendment. Furthermore, a total of $5.1 million will be invested between 2026 and 2028 in equipment, infrastructure, and the further strengthening of Selibon.

milFeasibility and Locations

An independent study is also currently underway into the financial feasibility and possible alternative locations for waste collection and processing. The results are expected in mid-August and will guide further decision-making on the future of waste management on Bonaire. With the addendum, the OLB and the Dutch government aim to lay the foundation for a financially sound waste chain and better protection of people and the environment.
