ORANJESTAD – The Government of St. Eustatius has announced the purchase of a new incinerator designed to reduce the island’s reliance on landfills and improve waste management practices. The equipment, which uses clean combustion technology, is expected to come into full operation in the first quarter of 2027.

According to the Government, the incinerator will be used specifically for non-recyclable waste. Statia’s recycling programme will continue to operate alongside the new facility. The system was developed in consultation with waste management company EJL Services, based on an analysis of local waste streams, and is designed to fit the island’s specific needs.

Commissioner of Waste Management, Reuben Merkman, described the initiative as a significant step forward: “This marks a defining moment for Statia. By shifting away from landfill dependency and embracing clean combustion technology, we are setting a new benchmark for sustainable waste practices in the Caribbean.”

Environmental standards

The Government states that the new system complies with international environmental standards and is intended to provide a more sustainable and efficient solution for waste disposal.
