KRALENDIJK – The Bonaire Human Rights Organization (BHRO) states that education on Bonaire is struggling with structural problems in the areas of equal opportunities, language policy, cultural identity, and educational outcomes. According to the organization, these issues touch on the fundamental rights of children.

BHRO points out that Bonaire has historically faced educational disadvantages, and argues that various concerns have persisted even after the constitutional changes of 2010. The organization highlights, among other things, the position of Papiamentu in education, cultural representation in curricula, and the question of whether education sufficiently meets the needs of Bonairean students.

According to BHRO, a number of parents have turned to schools and government authorities in recent years with complaints and concerns.

Discussion needed

The organization argues that further discussion is needed on the quality and structure of education on Bonaire, and intends to bring various aspects of education to the fore in the coming period from a historical, legal, and human rights perspective.
